Use Water Wisely—It’s Too Valuable to Waste
Summer is here, and so is peak irrigation season. July is Smart Irrigation Month, a national campaign to promote efficient watering practices and smart technologies that help save water, money, and landscapes.
The district encourages its customers to take simple steps toward using water more efficiently outdoors. Smart irrigation helps preserve our limited water supply and supports the long-term sustainability of our community.
Why Smart Irrigation Matters
Outdoor watering can account for up to 50% of household water use during the summer—much of it wasted due to inefficient practices or system leaks. Smart irrigation helps reduce waste by ensuring your landscape gets the right amount of water at the right time.
Tips for Smart Watering
- Water early or late: Run sprinklers between 6 PM and 10 AM to reduce evaporation.
- Adjust for weather: Don’t water during or right after rain.
- Inspect your system: Check for leaks, broken sprinkler heads, or overspray onto sidewalks and driveways.
- Upgrade to smart technology: Install a weather-based irrigation controller or soil moisture sensors that adjust watering schedules automatically.
- Group plants by water need: Use “hydrozoning” to avoid overwatering.
