The district would like to remind customers to shut off and winterize their sprinkler systems before freezing temperatures arrive. The district responds to numerous service calls for frozen or broken irrigation lines each year.
Turning off your system a little earlier than usual won’t harm your lawn — it will still come back healthy and green in the spring. However, failing to prepare your system properly can lead to costly damage once temperatures drop.
Follow these steps to protect your system:
- Shut off the water supply to your irrigation system.
- Turn off your timer or automatic controller to prevent it from running.
- Drain all water from pipes, sprinklers, and hoses. Water left in the system can freeze, expand, and crack the pipes. Contact a sprinkler professional to fully blow out your system.
- Protect valves and backflow preventers. If they’re above ground, insulate them to prevent freezing. Use insulation tape or covers to add extra protection.
Taking these simple precautions before the first freeze will help ensure your sprinkler system is ready to go next spring.
